| But Tomorrow Everything Could Change |
[Mar. 18th, 2007|01:36 am] |
About a month ago, I wrote and recorded a demo for a song called Paint It Red. It didn't really have a chorus, but it rather repeated the same five verses three times. The point of the song was that no matter how hard you try, life doesn't really change.
Well, I guess I was wrong.
Things are going great in my life right now, quite a shock for any regular readers of this blog. After many false starts and a pile of money spent on dating web sites, I met a girl who seems quite interested in me. Makes me upset I spent so much on those fruitless websites, but I'm happy with everything that's going on.
I'm not going to say much lest I jinx it, but everything is going far better than I could have ever expected. It's good to be back in the game... |

| I Don't Need to Wear This Shirt |

The Jimmy Carter Experience, my brother's band, had a gig tonight. I was standing around during the openers, and the singer actually singled me out and told everyone how great my T-shirt was (a Mr. Show shirt)... Embarassingly, I was not paying attention at the time. My friends had to tell me that I was part of the show! After that, I thought I should have been the focus of every band... alas, I was not. |

| | "Rainbows in the Dark" -- Tilly & the Wall | ] | Every year, my parents host a halloween party for my friends and me. It isn't your standard costume party at all, and it actually focuses another Halloween tradition: the Jack-O-Lantern. Each year, the works become more and more creative, and in recent years, we've even voted on which was the best.
I actually came up with 2 ideas this year. The first, I called the Jacko-Lantern. This would have been a white pumpkin made up to look like Michael Jackson. This pumpkin would be looking happily to the side at a trio of smaller pumpkins with scared looks on their drawn on faces. However, when I went to the local Halloween store, when I asked if they had any Michael Jackson gloves, the only response I recieved was "What kind of glove is that?" That made me feel pretty old...
My other idea, which I went with, was the "Punk-in." I gave the face a bit of a sneer and its eyebrows turned downward. On top was a mohawk wig I bought at Target, I added a chain that went from the "nose" [read: triangle] to the "ear" [read: side]. Finally, I wrapped a yard of plaid fabric around the base and stuck a bunch of safety pins in him ("eyebrow", etc). If you want to see it, I've got it up on my myspace page right now...
The competition was extremely fierce this year. Entries included: a Picasso inspired jumbled face; the words "EAT ME" written 360 degrees around the pumpkin; an iPod; a drawn & quartered pumpkin; a pumpkin that shot Silly String... However, the top three were:
3. a representation of the "Rock!" hand sign (pointer and pinkie up, the rest folded in)
2. a carving of a pumpkin carving into human
And number one? Well, did you really think I would go to all of the trouble to type this up if I had lost? yay, I won! |

| | Papillon -- Rilo Kiley | ] | Last April when I went to Italy, I wrote the following:
"...there's a call-in show where you try to guess words starting with An... It costs 50 cents a call and the prize winners are few and far between, but it's somehow mesmerizing"
Well, months later, it has hit our shores (albeit at 99 cents a call instead of .5 Euros). While innocently channel surfing a few nights ago, I found that TBS started running a call-in show of this nature to fill their midnight-2 am slot (which is, ironically, about the same time as the European versions air). And I, unfortunately, find it just as mesmerizing.
The games are bit more simplistic [yeah, I know, more simplistic than "words that start with An..."...? hard to believe], so they don't go on quite as long. However, the other night, one game went on so long that the hostess was adding $50 for every wrong guess... Started at $300, but there was $1000 in the pot before someone guessed it (and I'm glad I didn't call because my guess was wrong wrong wrong)
The first night that this show was on, there were no callers. I kinda wanted to play out of pity. But, alas, I didn't and now the show has enough rubes to subsain itself... |

| Who's Knockin' on the Wall? |
[Sep. 2nd, 2006|12:49 am] |
|
so by now, you all know of my insane plan to travel 1460+ miles for concerts this Fall. Well, guess what, I'm adding another show. I've fallen in love with Tilly And The Wall. They're a group out of Omaha and their main bass section is an amplified tap dancer. This is the eclectic stuff I love. Why didn't anyone alert me when they were playing in Cincy a year ago (when I didn't know who they were) versus the Nashville show I have to go to now? |

| | Sword - Rilo Kiley | ] | I hate hate HATE the new yahoo.com. On the old version of the page, they'd have prominent news stories, but now it's all garbage. Here are the four stories that Yahoo now thinks are important to me:
Meet Mark Wahlberg's 'Invincible' inspiration - oh! so I can see the inspiration for a shitty movie? Thanks!
Emmy Red Carpet Fashion Flashback - c'mon, fashion changes so quickly, why would I care about last seasons dresses?
Nerd, Geek, and Dork: What's the Difference: Someone should tell Yahoo that the second comma isn't needed. Which catgegory do I fall into for correcting your grammar mistakes, Yahoo?
and finally: See a Speedy T-Shirt Folding Technique: huh? because the normal way took so long previously? |

| A Thousand Times |
[Aug. 23rd, 2006|11:04 pm] |
Lately I've been posting movie related stuff to my myspace blog -- mostly just the reviews I write for the Georgetown newspaper -- but I thought this was interesting enough to cross-post. Oh, and if you haven't already, subscribe to my myspace blog so you can tell me how much my taste in movies sucks:
I've been saving my movie ticket stubs for about 15 years now, and some years after that, I started coounting them. After a recent count, I noticed that I was nearing my 1000th stub, so I thought I'd share some statistics with everyone (Note: some of the early stubs were missing and thus not counted, but my records for the later years are pretty much dead on):
Total movies recorded: 1000
Movie #1: The Rocketeer, 6/22/91 (of course not the first I ever saw, but they first one I have record of)
100: The Cable Guy, 6/14/96
500: American Psycho, 4/18/00
750: American Splendor, 9/14/03
1000: V for Vendetta, 8/23/06
Published reviews: 107 (Georgetown News-Graphic)
Most in one year: 127 (1998)
Most in one month: 18 (12/2000)
Busiest month: December (average 10.09 movies)
Least busy month: March (average 5.08 movies)
100+ years: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2004
Most Visited Theater: Woodhill (20.1%)
Private Screenings (had the theater to myself): 3 (Paulie, Pushing Tin, A Walk on the Moon)

| The Lovely Music |
[Aug. 20th, 2006|12:04 am] |
Well, late summer/early fall is shaping up to be a mighty strong period for concerts. Here's the rundown:
-On August 10th, on a whim, I drove up to Cincy to see MAE. I only have one of their albums and I don't know it well enough to sing all of the lyrics, but I thought it might be fun to see them live. I was right. Very solid performance, and since they played my 2 favorite songs as the encore, they had a very strong finish. I could have waited to see them in Lexington, but then I would have to miss...
-The Features, who are playing the same night. I've seen these guys 2 times already, but this will be the first time that I can sing along. This is a fun band, and I highly recommend that everyone pick up their first album, Exhibit A. If you can find it. I had to buy it when I saw them open for Fountains of Wayne last year.
-Nellie McKay in September. Sure, Nashville is 3.5 hours away, but this is so worth it. Her first album is nothing less than brilliant, and her second (unreleased) isn't far behind. Almost no one has heard of her, but she's definately one to check out...
-The Dresden Dolls in October. This time, I'll be travelling to Knoxville. I'll probably be the only non-Goth guy there, but I love this duo. It's powerful, angsty music.
Those are the ones that I've bought tickets for already, there's still some others that I'm on the fence about. The Mountain Goats, which I don't know a whole lot about other than the one album I have, are playing in Athens, OH (3.75 hours away), so that sounds interesting. Also, Jenny Lewis is going to be in Detroit, MI (5.5 hours away). If it was Jenny's main band, Rilo Kiley, I'd totally be there, but since it's her solo stuff, it's a toss up. What to do, what to do? |

| Theme to Flood |
[Jul. 28th, 2006|11:00 pm] |
Recently, our roommate Chad decided that he was going to move in with his girlfriend. Considering that we've rarely seen him in the last 8 or so months, this really wasn't much of a lifestyle change for my brother and me. As he started emptying his overly cluttered room, he started noticing a bit of a smell and the fact that his feet were getting wet. Well, it seems that the air conditioning was leaking into his room and since he hadn't been there in so long, the smell wasn't allowed out until he started stirring things around. And boy did it smell! Kinda like a pool that hadn't been attended to in a long, long time.
So, we take measures to combat this and the smell starts to dissipate and the room is dry.
Then, one day, my dad comes over to work on out garden. He, unfortunately, gets distracted before he leaves and forgets to turn off the hose. Because of the way the pipes are set up, all of the pressure is built up and refloods the room, as well as my room in the process. So, the war is now on two fronts! We were eventually victorious, but for a time, I was afraid I might have to resign myself to living in a world akin to Venice which I visited last Spring... |
